Common problems associated with leather furniture include discolouration of finish, dehydration, cracking, damage to fine stitching, sun damage, stains, marks and colour fading.

The secret to preventing these problems is to properly treat your leather, before they happen.

Why does leather dehydrate and crack over time?

Leather is a natural product that is used to being regularly oiled and maintained by a living animal.

From the moment the leather is no longer being fed by its natural oils, it starts to dehydrate. Leather is porous, similar to our skin and without regular moisturising it can become dry and brittle.

Keep your leather away from heat and direct sunlight. Also always try to keep your leather furniture away from heaters and out of direct sunlight. Direct heat sources will discolour, fade and dry out your leather over time, which will lead to permanent damage.

Will conditioning fix cracks in my leather?

It is very difficult to reverse cracks in leather, but it is possible to soften the appearance of cracks.

However, regular cleaning and conditioning will re-hydrate the leather surface, which will soften the existing appearance of cracks, while preventing further damage.

Leather requires special leather care.

Never use common household cleaners that are designed to clean kitchen benches, floors or carpets as these products contain strong chemicals and solvents. They will destroy the colour pigment, natural grain and characteristics of the leather.

Also, do not use Vaseline or similar products which contain too much wax as they will clog the pores of the leather.

How can I help prevent stubborn stains from occurring on my leather lounge?

The key to preventing stubborn stains on your leather lounge is to hydrate and condition the leather before marks and stains occur.

This will help stop dirt from penetrating quickly into leather, as dry leather surfaces will quickly absorb spillages, marks and stains, which can cause permanent damage. Regular conditioning will provide a protective barrier against spills and stains.

Why is it important to treat leather furniture with the right leather care formulation?

Leather furniture is expensive so it’s important that you care for it and maintain its soft and luxurious feeling.

Only use safe ingredients that will naturally protect the top and lower layers of leather, ensuring the leather maintains its original natural look, feel and durability.
