How do I protect wood surfaces in my house?

All timber requires regular care and maintenance in order to preserve the natural characteristic, look and finish that was originally intended. This type of furniture includes but is no limited to; outdoor furniture, coffee tables, kitchen benches and chairs, fine antiques, office furniture, window paneling and wood trimmings.

How do I look after wood?

One way to keep wooden furniture looking its best is to keep it in the shade.

Also make sure you keep your wooden furniture away from window sills, heaters and direct sunlight. Exposure to ultraviolet light, high humidity and heat will fade and lighten the wooden surface.

Why do I have to keep wooden furniture dry?

Always try to keep your wood dry.

Regular spills on timber surfaces will penetrate the grain of the wood, which can cause swelling, warping and stains. If the surface of the wood gets wet, dry it quickly. It’s also a great idea to always use coasters, placemats and table cloths which will help protect wooden furniture.

Why should I dust my wooden furniture?

Dusting your wood regularly will help reducing scratching.

Ideally you should dust and clean timber furniture once week, as dust and other particles left on the surface of the timber can be abrasive. If allowed to build up, the timber surface and the furniture’s finish will be subject to scratching.

How can I restore wooden furniture?

Clean wooden surfaces before restoring.

If your wooden surface has faded, cracked or requires re-oiling and polishing, be sure to clean the timber surface down with Oakwood Everyday Wood Wipes first. This will help remove any grime build-up within the grain of the timer, and will help provide a rich luster and shine to the timber surface when conditioned and polished.

How do I protect timber furniture?

Without regular care and maintenance, timber becomes unnourished, dry and susceptible to damage. We can protect our wooden furniture by feeding its natural protective coating.

Leather preserver and conditioner will be absorbed into unfinished timber grain and provide a resilient protective coating to the surface. This provides the necessary protection against spillages, marks, stains and the natural dehydration process.

How do I look after treated or painted wood?

If your wooden furniture has been painted or white washed, it still requires some care.

Many timber furnishings and surfaces have been treated with paints and other dyes, such as a white wash finish. Be careful when applying oils or polishes to these types of timber surfaces as they may change the characteristic, artificial colour and factory finish of the furniture. Instead, a damp clean cloth will do the trick on these surfaces.
